Coming Soon: The Influence of Extreme Climate Events on Shopping Behavior
I am proud to be working with Arun Sundararajan, NYU, and Rubing Li, NYU, to investigate how local exposure to extreme climate events, specifically wildfires, influences sustainable consumption choices. Using smoke coverage data from NOAA and air quality data from EPA, the study creates a uniform measure of wildfire exposure by day and zip code. The analysis estimates the impact on pre-owned item purchases and spending through difference-in-differences regression models, complemented by online experiments to test consumer behavior when primed with climate event cues.
